Former Google Engineer Indicted For Stealing AI Secrets To Aid Chinese Firms

Linwei Ding, a former Google engineer, has been indicted for stealing AI-related trade secrets and confidential information, which he allegedly shared with Chinese companies.

Ding, who worked on Google’s supercomputing data centers, uploaded over 500 files to his personal Google cloud account between May 2022 and May 2023.

Shortly after, he accepted a CTO job with a Chinese company, Rongshu, and founded Zhisuan, receiving funding to replicate and improve Google’s AI platform.

Google detected the unauthorised uploads in December 2023, leading to Ding’s resignation and legal action.
